Our feet inform the foundation of every step, balance correction and posture adjustment we make. Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments that support, stabilise and propel us through life. Yet they’re often the most overlooked part of the body when it comes to movement training and self-care.
When we improve the way our feet move and respond to load we influence the function of everything above them—ankles, knees, hips and even the spine. Healthy, mobile and strong feet are essential for efficient movement, stability and balance.
Releasing the Feet and Calves
Releasing tight tissues in the feet and lower legs can restore movement and ease throughout the kinetic chain.

Foot release with massage balls: Rolling the sole of the foot with a smooth, spikey or textured ball helps to release fascial tension and improve joint mobility. This simple technique increases circulation and enhances sensory feedback helping the foot to adapt more effectively to uneven surfaces.

Self-release and mobilisation: Using the hands to mobilise the soft tissue under the foot can free tension and improve joint glide. The foot’s windlass mechanism—its natural spring-like function—can be supported by gentle twisting, stretching and mobilisation techniques.

Training the Intrinsic Muscles of the Feet
The intrinsic foot muscles—small stabilising muscles that lie entirely within the foot—play a key role in arch support, balance and load transfer. Targeted exercises help strengthen these structures:
